Hostels

Hostels

Hostels (or youth hostels) provide short-term accommodation to travelers, particularly encouraging outdoor activities and cultural exchange for the young. In certain parts of the world, hostels are commonly called backpackers, particularly in Australia and New Zealand.

In a hostel guests rent a bed (sometimes a bunk bed) in a dormitory and share common bathroom, kitchen, and lounge rooms. Private rooms are often available. The main benefit of a hostel is that one gets to meet other travelers from all over the world. Hostels are usually less formal and less expensive than hotels.

There are some potential drawbacks to using hostels, although most are the same as drawbacks that you could find at many hotels. Theft can be a problem since guests share a common living space, but this can be prevented by locking belongings up. Most hostels offer some sort of system for safely storing your valuables, and many offer private lockers.

One potential drawback to staying in hostels is difficulty sleeping because of noise, whether from snoring or someone returning to the room late in the evening. For this reason, hostels associations fix reasonable times for last admission and lights out, and people who find it necessary use earplugs.

Bed and Breakfasts

Bed and Breakfasts

A bed and breakfast, often referred to as a B&B, is a lodging typically operated out of a large single family residence where guests can be accommodated at night in private bedrooms (which may or may not be equipped with private baths) and where breakfast, sometimes Continental and sometimes the full English variety, is served in the morning.

It is possible for guests to stay more than one night, but in some cases they will be expected to be away from the house during the main part of the day. One advantage of staying at a B&B is readier access to popular locations off the beaten path which may not be convenient to the city center.

Because most B&Bs are small, rarely with room for more than about 10-15 guests, it is advisable for anyone wanting to stay at a bed and breakfast to make reservations well in advance of their travel date.

Ecotourism

Eco Tourism

Ecotourism essentially means ecological tourism, where ecological has both environmental and social connotations. It is defined both as a concept / tourism movement and as a tourism sector.

The International Ecotourism Society defines ecotourism as “responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of local people”. However, this is a vibrant, new movement and there are various definitions.

Many global environmental organizations and aid agencies favor ecotourism as a vehicle to sustainable development.

Ideally, true ecotourism should satisfy several criteria, such as:

* conservation (and justification for conservation) of biological diversity and cultural diversity, through ecosystems protection
* promotion of sustainable use of biodiversity, by providing jobs to local populations
* sharing of socio-economic benefits with local communities and indigenous people by having their informed consent and participation in the management of ecotourism enterprises.
* increase of environmental & cultural knowledge
* minimisation of tourism’s own environmental impact
* affordability and lack of waste in the form of luxury

Polar Bear Tour

Polar Bear Tours

The polar bear (Ursus maritimus), also known as white bear or northern bear, is a large bear native to the Arctic. It is the largest land carnivore and the apex predator within its range. It is well-adapted to its habitat: its thick blubber and fur insulate it against the cold, its white color camouflages it from its prey, and it hunts well both on land and in the water.

The Polar Bear is a circumpolar species found in and around the Arctic Ocean whose southern range limits are determined by pack ice (their southernmost point is James Bay in Canada). While their numbers thin north of 88 degrees, there is evidence of polar bears all the way across the Arctic.

Their main population centers are:

* Wrangel Island and western Alaska
* Northern Alaska
* Canadian Arctic archipelago
* Greenland
* Svalbard-Franz Josef Land
* North-Central Siberia
